The Santa Monica College Music Department is pleased to present SMC Opera Theatre in a performance of Georges Bizet’s masterpiece “Carmen.” Shocking and scandalous when it debuted in 1875, “Carmen” is one of the world’s most popular operas today. Performances will be held in The Broad Stage at the SMC Performing Arts Center (Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street, Santa Monica). Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, and Saturday, May 20. Matinee performances at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, and Sunday, May 21. “Carmen” tells the tale of a love gone bad in Seville, Spain, between Don José – a young and naive soldier – and Carmen, an exotic gypsy woman who seduces Don José, but whose heart yearns for the elegant toreador Escamillo. SMC Opera Theatre’s fully staged and richly...
As this picture shows, these racists brought their foul stench to the July meeting. They came to broadcast their dislike for African Americans, Jews, immigrants, in fact all of humanity. They acted like children, blurting out misplaced statements, and holding up misspelled signs. In August some of the leaders of this Santa Monica assault marched with the plainclothes Nazis and Klansmen in Charlottesville. The week before they went to Charlottesville, they again tried to invade the Committee for Racial Justice meeting. They did not succeed. Although they came with much greater numbers to the August meeting and tried to bully their way into the meeting, the committee members were able to fight them off and go forward with the meeting as planned. In their anger and frustration, they promi...
New students for my "How to Write Funny" class at SMC say to me all the time, "I took your class because there are so many funny things in my life I want to write about." I say, "That's too limiting!" Take my class to write about whatever is in your heart or on your mind - anything and everything that you want to express yourself about - and we'll turn it into funny. To sign up for class which includes finding your "comedic voice," learning how humor writers get the laugh, and learning the tools of you'll need so you get the laugh, too, cut and paste: http://preview.tinyurl.com/lvvu6tm If you have questions for Jonathan, feel free to email him at Jonathan@SchoolforStandUp.Com

Opened in 2009 at Santa Monica State Beach, this is Southern California's most exclusive public beach club, with all the perks of a private membership without the high price tag. The Santa Monica beach house sits on the former 1929 estate of actress Marion Davies — which was a gift from her boyfriend, William Randolph Hearst. It was partially designed by Julia Morgan, who is best known for creating Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Today, the swimming pool and 7,000-square-foot guest house are all that's left of the original 5-acre compound, which w...

On Saturday morning, Santa Monica residents gathered at Santa Monica’s Airport Park to learn about and give feedback on the park’s future expansion and how it might affect the city. Mark Rios, who founded his own design firm in 1985, is spearheading the project. The event began with a comprehensive presentation by Rios outlining his priorities as well as three proposed plans for what the completed park might look like. The project aims to incorporate 12 acres of non-aviation land adjacent to the existing park, practically tripling its size. Everyone in attendance was then given a “passport,” on which they could share thoughts about each design, as well as what they would like to see in the park. Though opinions were divided, residents were given the chance to voice their thoughts, and hel...
